It only takes a few seconds for some motorcycle thieves to hoist your bike into their van and speed away, leaving you with nothing but your motorcycle insurance to get you home. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to deter motorcycle thieves and keep your motorcycle in your possession.
Here are the things you need to do to protect your bike against those types of professional thieves who want to take your bike:
- Realize that locks don’t really protect you that much. Don’t put too much faith in your locks. Professional thieves know what they’re doing. They know how to open locks, whether it’s by picking them or breaking them.
- Blot out the key numbers from your ignition lock. The numbers on your ignition lock are provided by the manufacturer to help you get new keys if you lose your originals. Record these numbers instead, and keep them in a safe location not near your bike.
- Customize your bike. If your bike is unique, it will be harder to steal. Thieves know that customized bikes are easier to track. A simple paint job isn’t enough, of course. You need to consider having some unique parts and markings. Make sure to document all of those things photographically so that you can give the police an accurate description of the bike.
- Consider an alarm. There are a number of anti-theft systems for motorcycles out there. There are some alarms that integrate with your wheel or disk locks. Some more sophisticated alarms can not only make a noise, but alert authorities or even send you a text message.
- Install a LoJack. A LoJack works for a motorcycle like it does for a car. It tracks the motorcycle via GPS. Of course, there is always the risk that the thieves would find and disable it, so you want to make sure you use this in conjunction with other types of security methods.
Don’t get stuck filing a motorcycle insurance claim. Spend some time and money to make sure that your bike is protected against professional thieves.
