Ola Stenegard studied Industrial Design in Stockholm and worked for SAAB and Indian Motorcycles before joining BMW in 2003. “I grew up in a garage, more or less,” he says. “My older brother was into bikes. Shoot It Like You Stole It

Shooting fast-moving motorcycles well with a video camera is bloody hard. I should know, I’ve been filming cars and bikes for TV for over 10 years and even now I sometimes get it wrong. Bikes especially are very hard to shoot well, they’re much more difficult than cars. They’re dynamic, relatively small and if you’re trying to shoot video of your mates or yourself looking fast on your bike, you can shoot for hours and be really disappointed with what you get when you get back home. Bikes too small in the frame, loads of wobble in your shots, dull-looking locations – it’s really not easy. But get it right and a fast-moving motorcycle looks incredible…

The terrible sand dunes of Fiambala are done, and this time the weather helped everyone a little hand. It had been raining for days before the day all motorcycle had to cross the frightening sand dunes, and now the sand was harder and firmer for motorcycles.

- Who are you and where are you from?

- My name is Chris Hunter and I live in Sydney, Australia, with my wife and three children. I’m English, I’m originally from London.

- What are you doing in life?

- By day I’m a creative director for an advertising agency. I occasionally write for marketing magazines and other websites, and in 2005 my first book was published. Bike EXIF is something I do in the evenings, and at weekends after the kids are in bed.

- What is Bike EXIF?

- The world’s leading motorcycle culture and design website. I’m passionate about design, photography and motorcycles, and Bike EXIF is a way to combine all three. And to connect with other people who share the same interests, like you.

- Yes Sir, What are you riding?

- My daily ride is a Moto Guzzi V7 Classic. I’m planning on getting a custom 1970s Guzzi V7 Sport or Le Mans one day.

- Why?

- The V7 Classic is a great city bike, light and nimble in traffic. It’s also powerful enough for long journeys, I did 2,500km around New South Wales and Victoria in five days back in January. And it starts first time every day!

- What color is your Moto Guzzi?

- White. That was the only colour available when it was launched!

- Which brands are your favorite in the motorcycle world?

Moto Guzzi, Ducati, BMW and Ural. In custom bikes, Deus Ex Machina, Ritmo Sereno and The Wrenchmonkees.

- Do you prefer Italian bikes or British bikes?

I like both. The only bikes I don’t like are “universal Japanese motorcycles” and the current model Harley-Davidsons, apart from the XR1200.

- What are your favorite in other motorcycle blogs?

Southsiders MC, The Vintagent, Greasy Kulture, RocketGarage, Italian Motor Magazine, Motorsport Retro.

Insuring your collectible or vintage motorcycle

As for insurance for your collectible motorcycle? You should be able to get Agreed Value coverage on a classic 1959 BSA Gold Star Catalina valued at $15,000 for somewhere around $25 a month, and that gives you the whole shooting match of coverage.

You can spend a lot less, but if you plan to ride the bikes in your collection, the above pricing is a reasonable approximation of what you can expect to pay.

Well, Honda might have the answer for you…but probably not.

The Honda Integra is a sort of a big, gumpy-looking scooter for the ‘All I want is transportation’ set. You won’t score any points – or ladies – riding one of these to bike night, but you will get the cutting edge of two-wheeled, rolling motorcycleesque transport.

To the good, they say this ‘mode of transport’ will get 77 miles per gallon, and that’s something.

Honda says the Integra a “midsize motorcycle,” but with a seating position that puts the rider’s feet forward like a scooter, it’s kind of a rich man’s Silver Wing. While the Silver Wing sports a 582-cc two-cylinder engine, the Integra gets along on top of a newly-designed liquid-cooled, 670-cc inline-twin. The Honda folks say this new engine delivers more punch and better low-and-mid-range torque, which sounds ideal for city riding.

It will have actual motorcycle-sized tires and a lower center of gravity, but it still looks like a scooter to me.

The company is hoping this thing will cater to “owners who prefer to ride at moderate speeds,” whatever that means.

A crankshaft with a 270-degree throw was designed to give the rider the “feel and character of a V-twin” while keeping the mill small. Anyone riding it will clearly be denied much “feel and character,” and V-twin or not, it surely won’t sound like a Harley.

Again, unlike the Silver Wing (which uses a belt-driven continuously variable transmission) the Integra has a dual-clutch transmission. Like it’s much, much faster big brother, the VFR-1200F, the Integra has a seven-speed gearbox unit with both manual and automated shift modes.

Strange but true.

They even say this thing can “adapt its shift logic parameters to the rider’s habits,” and again, that is some really special marketing lingo which I completely fail to understand.

The Integra is set to debut at the EICMA Motorcycle Industry show in Milan, Italy, but don’t worry, it’s pretty likely you won’t have to look at any of these if you live in the USofA as Honda is still pondering whether or not to even bring these to our shores.

I can already hear the crickets chirping when they pull off the silk cover…

The announcement was made by Terry Snow, CEO of Bonnier, and David Carey, president of Hearst Magazines.

The good news? Cycle World’s current staff will remain on board according to the two companies.

That staff includes Mark Hoyer, who has worked for Cycle World since 1999 and who leads the editorial team as vice president of brand content and editor-in-chief and Andrew Leisner, who leads the business side as vice president of integrated sales and marketing.

“Adding another leading men’s magazine to our portfolio of enthusiast brands presents larger opportunities for our strategic partners as we share many of the same advertisers,” Zinczenko said. “This acquisition reinforces Bonnier’s pursuit of aggregating the largest men’s audience in media.”

Bonnier now owns more than 50 media brands.

Founded in 1962 and based in Newport Beach, Calif., Cycle World publishes a monthly magazine with a circulation of 235,000.

Bonnier Vice President and Group Publisher Eric Zinczenko, who heads up the company’s Outdoor Group, will direct the Cycle World operations.

“Our company excels at serving passionate special-interest audiences, so Cycle World is a solid strategic fit,” said Snow. “The Cycle World brand holds a position of leadership and respect in the motorcycle industry. That means a lot for us as we look to enhance the connection that marketing partners can have with this audience.”

Cell phone cameras and inexpensive digital cameras should prevent you from making excuses for not having a lot of great shots.

Take them from all angles, from all sides and get plenty of closeups. Scan the motorcycle listings on any day and you’ll see ads which feature two or three, horrible blurry pictures. Some don’t include a picture at all, and you don’t sell motorcycles like that. Buyers think you’re  hiding something, or that your bike only has “a good personality.” Would you go on a blind date? Not bloody likely unless you’re desperate, and like you, buyers see the photos before they read the details. Fail to hook them with an excellent photo and you’ve lost the game before you even get on the field.

2. The Beauty Shots Will Tell the Tale

No one wants to see your filthy, grimy bike, and they damn sure won’t buy it. Whether the buyer is after a daily rider or a winter project, looks count for something.  It might be tuned to precise perfection, but if it looks like you just pulled it out of a barn, nada on the sale, compadre. If your bike looks like you just don’t care, buyers might go on to assume you skipped things like normal maintenance. Get out the hose and make those rags snap. Big money’s on the line once the bidding starts.

3. Photography Is About Focusing on the Details

If the background of your bike photos includes garbage bags, old rust parts and your pit bull taking a dump? You’re doing it wrong. That pile of junk behind the bike in every photo makes your bike look like junk, too. It’s just another piece from the pile. It also makes it difficult to see the bike clearly. C’mon, you can’t even make the effort to pull the bike out of the garage or get a barn find out of the barn? Move it away from other items in the background, put it in front of something plain so the buyer’s attention is on the bike.

If you have a lot of photos, you can include one where the bike is parked in a beautiful setting, something to give the buyer the idea that one day he might be riding it and stopped at a similar location. It’s a feel good beauty shot. But for the most part, plain backgrounds.

4. Warts and All

Concentrate on making your bike look top notch. Your photos give the buyer the experience of being right there, so if there is a paint bubble or dented tank or rust on the wheels, show them.

Buyers appreciate honesty and you’ll avoid nasty confrontations when the winning buyer shows up and sees the horror for the first time.

5. Don’t Be a Hoon

Don’t include pictures or videos of you smoking the tires on the bike and running the tach up to the redline. Just. Not. Done.

6. Write It Like You Stole It

Some sellers try to be clever, including so much nonsense in the title, you may not be sure what is actually for sale. When a buyer is searching for a bike, he enters what he wants and lots of unrelated bikes sometimes show up. Sellers think if they have a BSA for sale, they’ll just throw in names like Norton and Triumph and snag those buyers, too, or if they have a CB750, they say CB500, CB550, CB350 and on and on. Well, it’s not clever, it’s annoying. It jumbles up the listings and makes it harder for people to find what they’re looking for. Besides that, eBay frowns upon the practice and will often cancel the listing altogether. If you want to sell your bike, identify what you have for sale. If there is something that makes it special, be brief and accurate but keep it short. You can include the details in the description.

7. What It Is Is What It Is And Don’t Miss the Target

This is your chance to tell the potential buyer all about the bike. Write about the history of your motorcycle, maintenance, modifications, extras, options, anything and everything the buyer would want to know. Yes, this is where you sell it. Be clear, be accurate, but make sure you don’t leave anything out. Also, CHECK YOUR SPELLING! Use your computer spell checker to catch the obvious though lots of motorcycle terminology and names will show up as errors when they are not. Double check everything. If you’re not comfortable writing, ask a friend who has a way with words to help out.

8. Don’t Scare the Citizens

You may just be trying to be helpful, but there are good reasons to follow this rule. eBay looks at this form of contact as someone trying to complete the sale outside of eBay to get around the fees for the listing and sale and they will cancel your listing if they catch it. If you have a problem with the fees, the best way to avoid them is to not use eBay in the first place. If you like the great marketplace and exposure eBay provides, pay the fee, it’s worth it. Also, instructions to call or email outside of eBay is a common tactic used by scammers. If you’re honest, don’t make yourself look like you’re not. You want the buyer to trust you, not be suspicious.

9. The Price Is Right – So Don’t Blow Yourself Out of the Market

What is your motorcycle worth? Everyone thinks their bike is special and sometimes it is, if you have a perfect specimen or an un restored and complete collector item you might get really big money for it, but, often, you can find many similar bikes already on sale. Compare yours to those and put yourself somewhere in the market range. Just because you have the same model as a perfect one that sold for $20,000 doesn’t mean your non running junker will bring the same. Think. Also, set a reasonable starting bid. If you must get $15,000, begin bidding low, maybe $1,000 and set a reserve price. If you set the starting bid at $14,995, no one will bid because they’ll know that one bid will win it and they’re hoping for a bargain. Let the bidding work its way up. With the high starting bid and no one bidding, everyone will think there’s a problem with the bike everyone else is aware of, so they won’t bid, either. With 20 bids before getting to that price, the same person might bid that and more because it’s obvious many people want the same bike. An added plus, if you’re an eBay member, you can search for completed listings to see what similar items sold for, very handy when putting a price on your new listing.

10. Just Do It

This simply means you have to list it to sell it. Thinking about selling it, planning to sell it, getting ready to sell it and talking about selling it is no different than doing nothing. Unless you get it out there, it isn’t going to sell.

A round of the MotoGP World Championship, The Red Bull Indianapolis GP has been contested every year since 2008 and features all three World Championship classes: MotoGP, Moto2 and 125cc.

The Indianapolis Grand Prix is the only full-card round on the MotoGP calendar held in the United States, and that makes it your only chance to see the world’s best Grand Prix motorcycle racers ply their trade – at least without buying a plane ticket or crossing a border.

That will all change when the Circuit of the Americas near Austin, Texas opens for their inaugural season in 2013, but for now, Indy is the only domestic event on the calendar.

The newly paved layout for the race is similar to the setup used by Formula One United States Grand Prix drivers between 2000 and 2007. The entire course has been reversed and is run counterclockwise to the direction of the F1 layout.

A new series of corners were added right before the riders hit the start-finish line near Turn 1 of the classic Indy oval. The bikes don’t use any of the banked oval corners, and a double-hairpin at the Hulman Straight was replaced with the traditional esses configuration.

If you’re worried that you might miss the racing action due to bad weather, don’t. Unlike events run on the IMS classic oval, the riders make their laps around the recently refurbished road circuit during the Red Bull Indianapolis GP come rain or come shine.

Billed as “your chance to prove that your vintage machine runs as well as it looks,” the Rolling Concours is open to pre-1986 motorcycles.

Entrant’s vintage motorcycles will be  judged  based on form and function, and the team at Cycle World will take care of that test by leading  a ride of approximately 50 miles in the area surrounding Indianapolis.

Expect a stop for lunch and to then head on to the judging at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Parking will be available and trophies will be awarded when the winners are announced.

What’s is going to cost you for a chance at glory? The entry fee is $85 and includes admission to the Rolling Concours, the welcome reception at the Indianapolis Hyatt Regency,  3-day general admission to the Grand Prix, Rolling Concours entry, and lunch the day of the event.

The American innovator, unleashed

When last we met with Erik Buell on the day of the Buell Motorcycles factory liquidation in January 2010, he was visibly distraught: The Barracuda prototype he considered his finest creation would never see production. This past June, we rode the breathtaking new Erik Buell Racing 1190RS an evolution of the Barracuda concept during one of its first public appearances at Road America (see First Ride, page 40). After what must have been the 10th person approached Erik to sputter something to the effect of, Holy sh*t, that bike is fast and it looks fantastic, too, he was again moved almost to tears this time tears of joy. Buell has been working toward this moment for almost 40 years. That the 1190RS was ever built at all, never mind so quickly, makes this the most incredible, improbable comeback of the 21st Century and perhaps of motorcycling’s modern era.
